The more than 13 million Americans dependent on Social Security disability benefits are eager to know what changes they might expect from the new administration. While facing a long list of priorities, many people expect that the Biden administration will soon turn its attention to Social Security reform.
During his 2020 campaign, President Biden promised to “increase the benefit level for people receiving SSI (Supplemental Security Income) to at least 100% of the poverty level.” Other suggestions include removing the two-year waiting period for Medicare and the five-month waiting period for SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance) for those unable to work.
These changes would ensure that individuals who develop a disability, or other condition that limits their ability to work, are able to receive support quickly.
Other Proposals to Improve Social Security Disability Programs
Other proposals include removing what is referred to as the “benefit cliff” which refers to earnings limits for disability recipients. This often discourages disabled people from taking advantage of internship opportunities or part-time employment for fear they will lose their benefits. Increasing the limit will mean individuals with disabilities won’t have to choose between healthcare and employment.
Reforms may include getting rid of the SSI marriage penalty, increasing asset limits, expanding access to tax savings accounts, and strengthening the Social Security Administration infrastructure. This last proposal is aimed at making it easier to access benefits through field offices and phone service centers. Expanding Social Security benefits for retirees is also included in President Biden’s ambitious agenda.
Concerns
Everyone, including our Social Security lawyers near Oak Ridge, would like to see these reforms put in place. However, there are major concerns that Social Security funds are running low. In fact, the latest official estimate from the SSA indicates that benefits may see cuts by 2035. To reverse this trend, the administration is calling for increased payroll taxes to be collected from those making $400,000 or more.
Any of these changes will require at least 10 Republican Senators to sign on with the Democratic majority to pass. Nevertheless, there will likely be a lot of pressure to do something. Fixing and improving Social Security going into the future is going to be a priority for the American people.
