All About SSI

Published by Kenneth A. Miller

Our Social Security lawyers in Oak Ridge are ready to help you with your SSI benefits. Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, is a program through the Social Security Administration. It provides income to disabled people who haven’t worked enough years to be covered by Social Security Disability Insurance. Conversely, if you haven’t worked at all (or worked very little), you may be eligible for SSI. Social Security Disability and SSI are very similar, with the main difference being that SSI has the additional requirement of financial need.

Are you eligible?

You are eligible for SSI if you are disabled, blind, or at least 65 years old. In addition, you must have “limited” income and/or resources. You must live in the US or the Northern Mariana Islands. If you are absent from the country for a full month or more than 30 days consecutively, you will be denied. Lastly, you must be a United States citizen.

The Facts

SSI is financed by general funds of the U.S. Treasury. Social Security taxes collected under FICA (Federal Insurance Contributions Act) or SECA (Self-Employment Contributions Act) are not responsible for funding the SSI program. Did you know that in many states, if you are receiving SSI, you can also receive medical assistance?
