Can Diabetics Apply for Benefits?

Published by Kenneth A. Miller

Our Social Security Law Firm represents individuals with a wide variety of disabilities and conditions that prevent them from working full time. March 24 is Diabetes Alert Day, a day meant to recognize the seriousness of diabetes and the risk factors associated with it. But what is the Social Security Disability Administration’s view on this condition, and what are your chances of approval for benefits?

Diabetes & the SSA Blue Book

All Social Security Disability cases are decided using the disabilities and conditions outlined in the organization’s Blue Book. As of 2011, diabetes is no longer included on the list of endocrine disorders that qualify a person for disability benefits. This is because in many cases the symptoms of diabetes can be treated, allowing diabetics to lead full working lives.

Those well-acquainted with the extremes of this disease know that this is not always the case. Depending on the person and the severity of their condition, there may be complications that make full time work impossible. If these complications fall under another Blue Book category, there may still be grounds to pursue a disability benefits case.

Related Conditions That May Qualify You

To secure benefits, you will have to prove your diabetes-related condition hampers your ability to work to your greatest potential. The SSA may also assess your past work experiences to make its determination. Here is a sampling of conditions that may qualify you for benefits:

  • Peripheral neuropathy
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Kidney failure
  • Amputation of a limb
  • Cardiovascular issues
