Government Shutdown 2013

Published by Kenneth A. Miller

Dear Clients,

With the government shutdown that began on October 1, 2013, Social Security is operating on a limited basis in processing pending disability claims.  Our understanding, based on the Social Security contingency plan (found here: https://www.socialsecurity.gov/pressoffice/shutdown2013.pdf), is that Social Security will continue on what they consider “critical functions.”  The District Offices will continue taking new Applications for Benefits and pocessing Request for appeals of denials.  Disability Determination Services (DDS) will process initial claims and reconsiderations.  Offices of Disability Adjudication and Review (ODAR) will hold hearings  in cases that are currently  scheduled.  ODAR will NOT schedule new hearings or write decisions during this time.

During this difficult time, we anticipate all remaining functions within Social Security will slow down.  We will try to keep you posted as we learn anything!  Our office will continue our work on your case.

We encourage you to contact your Congressmen and Senators and let them know how you feel!!

Representative John Duncan, Jr: (Knox, Blount, Loudon, Grainger, Claiborne and portions of Jefferson and Campbell Counties)

Representative Chuck Fleischmann: (Anderson, Bradley, Campbell, Hamilton, McMinn, Morgan, Polk, Roane, Scott, Union):

Senator Lamar Alexandar (all of Tennessee):

  • Knoxville Office: 865.545.4253

Senator Bob Corker (all of Tennessee):

  • Knoxville Office: 865.637.4180
