Social Security Disability for Vision Impairment

Published by Kenneth A. Miller

20.6 million American adults suffer from vision loss. When you begin to lose your sight, you continue to face a life with many challenges. Your costs of living are higher from transportation fees, home modifications, expensive technologies, or anything to help you adapt to your environment. Especially if you lost your vision later in life, this can also cause a large sum of medical bills from doctors trying to help you gain it back. If your vision has been severely impaired, you may be eligible for Social Security Disability benefits.

Meeting the Disability Evaluation Under Social Security Requirements for Vision Impairment

SSA disability examiners will be the people who review whether you receive benefits from a claim. They use these Disability Evaluation Under Social Security qualifications to determine eligibility. To qualify, you must meet one of the criterion listed below. These are brief explanations of vision impairment listings you can qualify for:

  • Loss of central visual acuity: This listing requires you see no better than 20/200 in your best eye’s central field of vision.
  • Contraction of visual efficiency, or visual impairment: What this means is your visual field must be very narrow. You must have specific tests recorded form your doctor as proof that your visual field is narrowing. The diameter of your visual field must be no greater than 20 to 30 degrees.
  • Loss of visual efficiency, or visual impairment: This is the listing which covers issues that cause blurry vision, unfocused vision, or a complete blindness. To qualify, your vision in your best eye cannot be better than 20/200 without corrective lenses.
