What Do Vocational Experts Do?

Published by Kenneth A. Miller

At Social Security Disability hearings, the vocational expert (VE) is the individual with in-depth knowledge of both local job availability and the skills needed to perform specific jobs.

If you need the services of a disability attorney in Maryville and surrounding areas, contact the law offices of Kenneth Miller & Associates. We’re experts in representing clients during disability hearings and in cross-examining vocational experts.

Testimony and Questioning

After two denials of your disability claim, you can request a hearing before an administrative law judge (ALJ) and a VE.

The ALJ and your attorney will ask the VE a series of questions, known as hypotheticals, related to your limitations.

If the VE testifies that you can no longer perform your old job, the ALJ and your attorney will ask the VE more hypotheticals to see if you can do any other jobs. If the VE testifies there are jobs in your area that a person with your limitations can do, your claim may be denied.

Cross-Examination

Fortunately, your attorney can ask follow-up questions, and this cross-examination is the most important part of the hearing. The goal is to secure approval of your claim by getting the VE to concede that there are no available jobs you can do.

Having an experienced disability lawyer in Maryville is crucial to the success of your disability hearing. Contact the firm of Kenneth Miller & Associates, and we’ll prepare you and stand beside you before the administrative law judge.
