Anxiety and Social Security Disability

Published by Kenneth A. Miller

The term “anxiety” is thrown around a lot, but as social security lawyers in Maryville, we know the crippling effects it can have on someone’s life. Anxiety disorders are characterized by persistent feelings of tension, uneasiness or apprehension. The overwhelming feelings of alarm may even be triggered by everyday occurrences and situations. Anxiety disorders have a huge impact on daily life and should be taken seriously. In some cases, an anxiety disorder may be so severe that it is impossible to leave the house, let alone hold a job.

Doctors diagnose five major types of anxiety disorder, including generalized anxiety disorder which is a fairly constant state of tension and worry that lasts at least six months, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, phobias and post-traumatic stress disorder. The Social Security Administration considers anxiety disorders a mental disorder. Keep in mind that it might be hard to claim benefits as it’s hard to obtain medical evidence that’s definitive. It’s a highly subjective manner and it’s difficult to prove feelings and situations outside of the doctor’s office.
