November is Diabetes Awareness Month

Published by Kenneth A. Miller

According to the World Health Organization, the number of people with diabetes has quadrupled since 1980. The causes of diabetes are complicated, but the rise is in part due to increases in obesity and sedimentary lifestyles.

Diabetes of all types can lead to complications in many parts of the body, making daily activities difficult and prohibiting a normal lifestyle. If you have diabetes, you may be eligible for Social Security Benefits. A disability lawyer in Maryville can best walk you through the Social Security qualification process, but here are some important requirements to note:

Qualifying for Diabetes Disability Benefits

Diabetes mellitus is the medical name for both Type 1 (“juvenile”) and Type 2 (“adult onset”) Diabetes. To qualify for Social Security Disability benefits based on diabetes, your doctor must diagnose you as having diabetes mellitus and at least one of the following conditions:

  1. Neuropathy- This an abnormality of the nervous system that must significantly affect two extremities in a dramatic way. For example, if you have trouble walking or a sustained disturbance in other limbs due to neuropathy, this may be an additional condition for you to qualify.
  1. Acidosis- The abnormal increase in the acidity of bodily fluid that occurs at least once every two months. Documentation via blood tests is required in order for this supplementary condition to qualify.
  1. Diabetic Retinopathy- This is when blood vessels inside the eye are damaged resulting in a significant loss of visual or peripheral vision in the better of the two eyes. So, if you are having difficulty seeing then this may be a supplementary condition to help you qualify.
